Lumi Yeh Costa (they/them) is
a biracial, non-binary writer, teacher, sound designer, and filmmaker from Central New Jersey. A graduate of Emerson College and the University of Texas at Austin Screenwriting MFA program, their stories often revolve around the gray area of identity, loneliness, and a loss of belonging within oneself and one’s community.
Some of their films include stop-motion animated shorts I Am Not An Astronaut (2022), and award-winning The Girl Inside of the Monster (2020), and live-action Conversations with Strangers: a Hong Tatt Foo Documentary (2020). Their sound design is featured in fictional podcasts The Haunted Hour and BAMCinemaFest selected works Sunrise/Sunset (2019), and Clytaemnestra (2022) which was included on the New Yorker’s best movies of 2022 list.
They wrote the screenplays for short films Squall Mouth (2025) and Beauty Queens (2023) which were selected for numerous festivals. Their original screenplays Monsoon (2025) and Aunt Mei (2021) have been recognized by numerous awards and competitions including Screencraft and the Santa Barbara International Screenplay Competition.
They currently teach at a small boarding high school in rural Iowa with their small orange cat, Yui and typically spend their free time cooking and learning new languages.
